1.1.1.2.1. Subordinate compounds

Compounds in which one of the items is a head are called subordinate compounds. Subordinate compounds have a head that marks the category of the compound.  In the exocentric compound long^neck(‘giraffe’), the head of the compound is neck, modified by long.
