9.2.1. Metonymy vs. metaphor

Metaphoric usage of linguistic expressions involves two domains: concrete and abstract, and concrete concepts are mapped to abstract concepts. Metonymy, on the other hand, involves substituting one concept with another related one.

          Metonymy [Lexicon - 1.1.] is also possible in TİD. The sign antalya, a city in Turkey, is homophonous with the sign orange since Antalya is famous for its oranges.

In the following example, federatıon, which is an institution stands for the members of that institution.

 

 

          federatıon yesterday report accept

          ‘Federation accepted the report yesterday.’

 

In the following, denızlı, another city in Turkey, stands for the Deaf association in that city.

 

          denızlı t-i-d educatıon start

          ‘Denizli has started TID education.’

 

In the following, a vehicle, bıcycle, stands for its driver.

 

          mornıng bıcycle ıx₁ hıt

          ‘A bicycle hit me in the morning.’
