2.3.1.3. Order of modals with respect to the verb

Modal verbs [Lexicon 3.3.3] in DGS are usually positioned verb-finally and hence occupy the sentence final position as in example (a). Nevertheless, modal verbs can also precede the verb as in (b).

 

a.       ix1 dive can

‘I can dive.’
 

 

b.       ix1 can dive

         ‘I can dive.’
