Grammatical functions are syntactic notions like subject or object. Some of them belong to the argument structure of the predicate and are thus obligatory (verb arguments), and some others are optional in the clause (adjuncts). This chapter offers an overview of the main properties of verb arguments and their differences when compared to adjuncts.
