Chapter 2. The sign language community

The sign language community of Catalonia is an independent community in the Catalan territory that has its own characteristics, some of which are influenced by the visual-gestural modality of the language they use. This chapter offers an overview of different aspects of the sign language community. It includes demographic information of the community and the sign language users, as well as a description of the main characteristics of its culture and education, and some remarkable historical events that influenced its development.
