1.5. Non-manuals
Non-manuals in any sign language refer to facial expressions, and head and body movements. In this section, mouth actions and other non-manuals are distinguished regarding their phonological functions. Within mouth actions, mouth gestures and mouthing may be distinguished. Both mouth gestures and mouthing can be phonologically contrastive in LSC. In the pair of examples shown below the manual articulation of the sign is the same for both signs, but the sign enough is articulated along with the mouthing ‘prou’ (the Catalan word for ‘enough’), and the sign only is articulated along with the mouth gesture [ppt].
