The use of signing space may take two forms. On the one hand, it may be used abstractly, in a non-descriptive manner, when locations in space are chosen arbitrarily. On the other hand, it may be used topographically, in a descriptive manner, when the actual spatial location of the referents being talked about is mapped onto the spatial disposition of locations in signing space. Some contexts combine both uses of signing space.
