Chapter 11. Register and politeness

Language users have a range of varieties and choices of linguistic resources that they may use according to the communicative situation. One the one hand, linguistic registers describe the relation between the form of language that is used by individuals and certain features of the context in which this language is used. The term register is used for the kind of linguistic variation that depends on the communicative situation. On the other, politeness is defined as the expressions of the sender’s intention to mitigate threats carried by some threatening acts towards another discourse participant.
